Network options

This tab contains settings that allow Web Screen Saver to know if the computer is connected to the network or not.

First, you have to define a test URL if you want to enable detection of the network. When you set a test URL, Web Screen Saver queries this address when the software is launched and at the end of the page loop. If there is a reply on this address, Web Screen Saver knows that the network can be used. When there is no reply on the test URL, Web Screen Saver will not use the network anymore and switch the web browser to off-line mode. After that, all pages will be retrieved from the local Internet Explorer cache.

The "Check connection to the network" option buttons have three choices:

• Never
  Select this option if you want to disable network test. In this case, the web browser will be always online and download content from the network.
• Always
  Select this option if you want a network test to be performed every time the software is launched and at the end of the page loop.
• Auto detect
  Select this option to perform a network test only if pages listed in the page list have http:// like adresses.

When a network test is performed, it uses a test URL. However, this test URL can be stored in different locations:

• Use test URL stored in the Windows registry
  When this option if selected, the test URL is saved to the "TestURL" parameter of the Web Screen Saver Windows registry. This is the default option.
• Use home page for test URL
  Select this option if you want to use the home page URL as test URL. The home page is set in the General tab of the Configuration dialog box.
• Use test URL stored in the Configuration file
  When this option if selected, the test URL is saved to the "TestURL" parameter of the .WSS Configuration file.

Finally, the address typed in the Test URL text box is used to check connection to the network when it is necessary to retrieve files using HTTP protocol. It is used in three cases:

• "File Open from the web" command,
• "Update every day" scheme,
• "Update once when screensaver is launched" scheme.

You should provide here a reliable and fast loading URL. An HTTP request is sent to this URL. If it succeed, the computer is connected to the network. The default value is the home page address if you provided it in the "General" tab, or Web Screen Saver web site address:

http://www.web-screen-saver.com

If you are not connected to the internet, you have to provide here an address that can be accessed by the computer, for instance, your intranet server:

http://myserver/

If the computer running Web Screen Saver is behind a proxy server, you have to set proxy settings. These parameters are necessary to go through the proxy server and access the network.

Provide a "User name" and a "Password" in the appropriate text boxes to connect to the proxy server.
